When to drop the day time sleep?

For those of you whose children no longer nap in the day, when did they stop and how did you know it was the right time?

Ella normally wakes up at about 6-6.30 am and goes to bed at 7pm, and to sleep usually by 7.30-8pm. She normally has a sleep after lunch for about 45mins to 1.5 hours. She’s had the odd day where she’s gone without, and man we’ve know about it at bed time – tonight being one of those nights!

I know that at some point she’s going to drop her day time sleep, and thats fine but I’m not sure how you know when the right time is? At the moment, if I didn’t put her to bed she’d lie down on the floor and fall asleep. She often says she’s not tired, but within 10 mins of being in bed, she’s fast out. If she doesn’t have a sleep, by 3pm she’s wasted.

When the time does come, I know I’ll have to ride out the over-tired monster phase, but at the moment its more than that and I don’t think she’s quite ready to drop it. How did you know when and how did you deal with it?
